It was a brilliant all round performance by Preston Grasshoppers, as they had to display brilliant defence alongside some great attack to beat an impressive Hull side 42-29.

Both sides picked up a try scoring bonus point, but 20 points from the boot of Greg Smith helped make the difference.

Hoppers made a great start to the game, with Harry Holden scoring off the driving maul just four minutes in.

It was a quick double when Jacob Browne scored after an excellent passing move saw him with space out on the wing.

Hoppers extended their lead with a penalty, but Hull started to get into the game more from there, initially through Keane Naylor who scored out wide.

A penalty from Fynlay Hobson cut the lead down, before Bureta Faraimo went over from the pick and drive, and the conversion put Hull into the lead for the first time.

Smith scored a penalty on the stroke of half time, which meant Hoppers went in just one point ahead.

Hoppers had a flyer to the second 40, Harry Holden added a second from yet another driving maul just one minute in, with that try the hookers 10th of the season so far.

Owain Williams then displayed a moment of brilliance, picking up on a loose ball in his own half before running over 60 metres for Hoppers’ bonus point.

Ciaran O’Donnell rounded out a strong opening 20 minutes to the second half, Hull lost the ball on their own line, and the scrum half sniped on it to put Hoppers onto 39 points.

The game flipped on its head when Hull were awarded a penalty try after Rob Willetts was deemed to have pulled the maul down, and he was shown a yellow card, alongside Daz Hill who was shown one for a high tackle.

Despite being down to 13 men, Hoppers held the ball well, even putting away a penalty of their own to run down the clock.

Hull did score through Harrison Astley to grab a bonus point, but Hoppers saw the game out with Smith’s fourth penalty of the game helping to secure another five points.

Head coach Dan Orwin said he was delighted for his side to pick up the win.

“I think it’s been a long time coming that performance, I’m really happy,” said Orwin.

“I think the first 15 minutes were exceptional, sticking to the game plan and the process. I those opening 15 were as good as we’ve been all season.

“Dipped off slightly after that but it’s inevitable that momentum changes in game, but the resilience to come out in the second half impressed me, we knew we were the better team, but the better team doesn’t always win.

“We knew we were going to have to work hard for it and we did. We took our chances and the defence was phenomenal, even when we were down to 13 the fight was there. I couldn’t be any happier really.”

Hoppers face tough opposition next time out as they head to Leeds Tykes, who are still unbeaten after defeating top of the table rivals Sheffield.
